Presidents' Council Minutes: Improper Dress, Expulsion and Smoking

Date
January 31, 1962

During the Presidents' Council (Women's Interdormitory Council) meeting of January 31, 1962, the issue of "improper dress" was raised and it was mentioned that two girls had been forced to leave Dickinson (expelled) after being out of their dorm overnight without permission. In addition, it was decided that a change in smoking policies for women was not necessary:

  • "Biddle Report: House Council discussed the problem of improper dress in the dining hall and recommended that individual house councils handle the cases in their dorms.
  • Announcements: Dean Wishmeyer announced that two girls had been required to withdraw from school for being out of Drayer overnight. She explained that the case was not handled by Presidents' Council because it was not felt that the nature of the case was one most easily decided by students and because the girls, having admitted their guilt, preferred not to appear before others for a decision.
  • Smoking in the Dining Halls: The possibility of changing the no-smoking rules for dining halls was discussed. It was decided there is no need to change the rule."
