Grievances against the Dean of Women

Eavesdropping and Other Grievances

"Suggestions Considered Requisite by the Students of Dickinson College for the Improvement of the College," distributed to faculty and trustees on December 15, 1945, documents the reasons for the appointment of a new dean of women. The "miscellaneous grievances" the document cites include: the Dean of Women eavesdropping on female students' personal conversations; the refusal of the Dean of Women to permit female students to leave campus even when they have proper permission from their parents; the inability of house mothers to make "even the most minor decisions without consulting the Dean of Women"; the maintenance of wartime rules for women without any attempt on the part of the dean to "revert to pre-war rules."
