May Morris Honored at Dinner

Date
November 2, 1956

This dinner program honors Miss May Morris in Morgan Hall on November 2, 1956, the year of her returement. Born in June 29, 1886, May Morris, Class of 1909, became Dickinson College's librarian in 1927 and revitalized its collection, budget, and general organization. She received her Ph. B. from Dickinson and a degree from the Pratt Institute of Library Science in Brooklyn, NY. When Miss Morris became Dickinson's librarian, there was only one librarian, one assistant, 52,000 volumes and a budget of $6,050. When she retired in 1956 (the year of this honorary dinner) the college library had 5 professional librarians, 4 assistants, 102,326 volumes and $48,576 in budget money. Miss Morris organized and collected many of the works found in the current Dickinson College Archives and Special Collections, including the Norris Collection.  She became the 2nd female full professor (of library science) in Dickinson history, second only to Dean Meredith (who became full professor of English).  In 1966 the construction began on the new Spahr library, but unfortunately Miss Morris died January 27, 1967 and did not see it completed.
